Hariyali Teej: A festival of womanhood in India

Hariyali Teej is the Rasjathani festival that celebrates womanhood in the most beautiful ways and is dedicated to the union of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. This auspicious festival is celebrated with the advent of the blissful monsoon season and with great joy and fervor among women.

The sacred festival that symbolizes the affection of god Shiva and goddess Parvati falls at the end of the Hindu month ‘Sawan’ and the beginning of ‘Bhadrapad’ or ‘Bhado’ and on the third day of the fortnight of Bhadra month. According to the Gregorian calendar, the date varies from the month of August to September every year.

Hariyali Teej significance:

Vibrant ethnic attires, gorgeous jewelry, sweets, floral swings, folk songs, dances, processions, special prayers, fairs, and fasting mark the festival and render it a beautiful cultural vibe. Women in different states commemorate this festival in various ways to symbolize their dedication towards their goddess and seek her blessings to strengthen their bonds with their life partner to have a prosperous life.

As the legend goes, the story of Teej is something like this – Mata Parvathy was in love with Shiva, but he was not aware of her affection towards him. To please him, the Goddess prayed for many years in the Himalayas. Finally, Lord Shiva noticed Goddess Parvati and realized the purity of her profound love and devotion for him, and they got married. Since then, the goddess has been worshipped as ‘Hartalika’ and ‘Teej Mata’ by women across North India. It is said, whoever worships her, is blessed with a good and prosperous married life.

Hariyali Teej Rituals:

  • Women dress up like newlyweds in beautiful red and green colored attires, apply henna in their hands and wear beautiful glittering bangles, anklets and lots of jewelry to look their best.
  • Married women observe ‘Nirjala Vrat’ which is a holy custom of strict fasting in which they neither drink water nor eat anything. They complete their fast when the moon appears in the sky and treat themselves with a delicious feast.
  • Women gather in the evening to tell and listen to stories of the legends associated with this holy festival which symbolizes the virtue of the gods. They also sing and dance to the folk songs that are sung during these kinds of cultural festivals.
  • Sweets form an integral part of the festival as north Indians are really fond of sweet delicacies like Ghevar, Ladoo, Choorma, Kaju Katli, and Sattu.
  • The lighting of a Diya throughout the day is also a ritual in this festival. A special pooja is also conducted to the gods where they make their offering to their deity in the form of flowers, fruits, and sweets. Married couples ask for god’s blessings and visit temples.
  • A fun activity of playing on the swings is also associated with this festival. The swings are decorated with flowers.
